Mid-Century Modern takes Houston High-Rise
These New York empty-nesters purchased this Houston high-rise condo and requested a fresh mid-century interior design. The entire space, including the kitchen and bathrooms was gutted and walls were relocated for a more functional and open space plan. The original windows and sliding glass doors remained which allows natural light to flow throughout the home. With new lighting throughout, white paint, wood floors, mid-century appropriate trim, and new cabinetry, a mid-century design was born.
Walls and doorways were shifted to create a more open and spacious floor plan. By creating a true entry way into the home a more private hallway into the master bedroom and bathrooms was configured. The new hallway also helped provide the depth needed for a custom living room media cabinet that the clients desired for additional storage. The custom sliding citron screens hide the flat screen television while not in use and also create an interesting focal point for the living room.
The living room and dining room are furnished with seating pieces covered in vibrant multicolored fabrics that add the mid-century modern flare. The beautiful brass and acrylic cocktail table takes center stage. The wool and silk turquoise rugs ground each space to add an abundant amount of color. The large rugs also help with sound control in the space.
In the kitchen, white cabinetry and aluminum framed frosted glass cabinet doors made the space feel larger and brighter. This also added the element of simplicity which is found in mid-century modern homes. Removing the wall between the kitchen and dining room created a prime location to place the stainless stove and island mount vent hood. The sculptural stainless tambour bar table base with a reclaimed wood top created a perfect space for the two of them to casually dine and watch television. The colorful 50’s wall covering along with the bright orange & white barstools livened up the space and completed the mid-century modern look. New stainless steel appliances, polished nickel light fixtures and metallic tile backsplash adds a reflective look to the modern space.
The intent of the master bedroom was to create a modern tranquil space for sleeping. The linen upholstered king bed is finished with luxurious custom bedding that was fashioned with citron and plum embroidered fabrics.
Both his and her bathrooms were designed with new cabinetry to maximize storage and have elegant finishing touches from the quartz countertops to the new polished nickel light fixtures. The white cabinetry and white marble tiles allow both of these lavish bathrooms to look more spacious and give a timeless fresh look. Her built-in cabinet has glass does and shelves that are lit. A glass tile pattern covers the end wall and shower walls in her bathroom.
